2020, the year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

Florence Nightingale is often credited as the founder of modern nursing. 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of her birth. The International Council of Nursing, World Health Organisation and Burdett Trust have declared 2020 the “International Year of the Nurse and Midwife”. Their partnership has led to the creation of the three-year (2018 - 2020) Nursing Now campaign, which aims to improve global health by raising the profile and status of nursing worldwide.

To celebrate this important year in nursing, Eating Stones Fund UK has become a local Nursing Now group and have developed a programme for 2020 which will promote shared learning and greater understanding of global health issues.

By raising the profile of nurses and midwives in resource poor settings, we aim to create greater unity and awareness of healthcare delivery around the world. Through our work we hope to create a legacy of nursing collaboration which will ultimately contribute towards the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and achieving Universal Health Coverage. This is how we will play our part:

• run the first Western Kenyan Nursing & Healthcare education conference.

• commence a five-year commitment to our Kenyan nursing scholarship programme.

But with the help of our Kenyan partners and UK universities we want to do more. By offering UK universities the opportunity to become part of our 2020 project we will:

​

• run provide five UK university nursing departments with bursaries to support student nurses and midwives to visit resource poor settings and better understand global healthcare challenges.

• deliver taught sessions for UK universities on the barrier to delivering healthcare in resource poor settings, from a nurse with over 10 years experience working to relieve poverty in Kenya.

• support our five UK partner universities in creating their own global legacy for the year of the nurse and midwife, through exciting fundraising opportunities.

• provide an additional annual bursary for four additional years for the most successful university fundraising group.

• develop two meaningful volunteer opportunities, per participating university, for UK nursing or midwife students to visit eating stones projects in Kenya.

• invite lecturers and academics from UK universities to take part in our Kenyan conference and help introduce their departments on a global nursing stage.
